EA SPORTS FC 27 FC 27 Controls and Gameplay
How the pitch is supposed to feel before you blame the cards.
EA’s Gameplay Deep Dive (29 July 2026) is the source for how FC 27 is supposed to play. The trailer above is that Deep Dive. This page translates it into a practice plan you can run in Kick-Off before Ultimate Team or Clubs inside The Grounds punish bad habits.
The game is still upcoming, so button prompts can still shift in a day-one settings menu. The ideas will not: less automated defending in competitive play, more manual jockey/intercept radius for people who actually defend, corners split into setup and delivery, and attacking AI that uses curved runs along the offside line.
Two presets: Competitive and Authentic
EA split the philosophy:
- Competitive — player-focused defending, less AI lunge, more reward for manual jockey, blocks, and interceptions. This is the preset for FUT Champs, Clubs leagues, and anyone who hated auto-press.
- Authentic — more true-to-football variety, fatigue, and the kind of mess you want in Career Mode. Wet-pitch slipping and late-game breathing animations were called out in Career notes and bleed into how matches look.
Kick-Off is where you should feel both before you lock a 15-season save or a Weekend League weekend. FC 27 Lite at launch is also Kick-Off-only, so it is a valid tutorial even if you have not paid for Career or FUT yet. How to open the mode, Rush, and Lite’s store limits: Kick-Off and Lite. Editions: pre-order.
Closed Beta tweaks (3 September 2026)
The July Deep Dive is the philosophy. The Closed Beta Pitch Notes are the last public tuning pass:
- Shoulder Challenge works side-by-side, not as a from-behind spam. Repeat presses make the defender stick an arm out and lose speed. Bruiser+ is slightly reduced.
- Team Press has no effect in your defensive third. Low Defensive Depth sits more conservatively without freezing the line.
- AcceleRATE profiles sit closer together; triggered runs have limited distance; female Lengthy needs 5’8” / 172 cm.
- Player Lock no longer auto-dribbles the carrier around defenders. CPU passes during lock have more error.
- Dinked Pass is double-tap Through Pass and aim. Double-tap Ground Pass stays on the ground.
- Corners give free movement: the game does not drag you to the landing spot. Use Shielding and Avoidance.
EA also said early Title Updates will not make significant gameplay balance changes. Practice the list above in Kick-Off instead of waiting for a week-one patch rumour.
Defending
The Deep Dive’s most repeated line: AI defending is dialled down in competitive contexts. The CPU teammate should stop making the heroic tackle you did not ask for. In exchange, manual defenders get a larger useful radius on jockey, contain, and interceptions.
Practice drill in Kick-Off:
- Turn off analog sprint as a panic button. Sprint-jockey into a 91 Mbappé and you will still bounce.
- Defend a 10-minute half using only contain, second-man contain, and interceptions — no slide until you need one.
- Set tactical defending (not legacy) unless you have a specific reason. Competitive play assumes tactical.
- If you came from a high-press custom tactic, rebuild it. Auto-press covering for bad positioning is the thing EA says they reduced.
Attacking, dribbling, and set pieces
Attacking awareness is meant to create better arrival, not more ping-pong. Curved runs hold width along the offside line so through balls have a lane instead of a straight sprint into the flag. Dribbling is described as more responsive; treat that as “practice left-stick dribble again,” not a promise that every 70-rated winger is Ronaldinho.
Corners are two-phase: set the delivery, then influence the runner. That is the skill gap. In Kick-Off, take ten corners from each side before you invent a FUT corner tactic based on a YouTuber’s FC 26 video.
Shooting still respects the ratings. Harry Kane’s 94 shooting on a 90 overall card is not a rumour — it is on the published attributes used in our forwards tier list. Gameplay does not flatten that.
Controller, keyboard, and cameras
Consoles: full controller support, DualSense features on PlayStation as the storefronts list them. PC: the September PC Deep Dive promised modernised keyboard controls, a VRAM indicator, Steam Friends via EA Connect, and faster launch (EA cited up to ~50% on some configs). Keyboard users should open the binding screen on first boot rather than assuming FC 26 binds survived.
Camera: for Competitive, a slightly higher Tele Broadcast or Co-op camera is still the usual advice; Authentic players can stay on Broadcast. There is no single “correct” camera in Pitch Notes — pick one in Kick-Off and stop changing it every game.
A one-hour practice block
- 15 min defending 1v1 in a Kick-Off skill game or a Grounds 1v1 if you are on current-gen.
- 15 min build-up against a high line to feel curved runs.
- 10 min corners, both teams.
- 20 min a full Kick-Off match on Competitive with your intended camera.
Then go to Getting Started and pick a mode. Gameplay is shared; the menus are not. Clubs defending in The Grounds will feel closer to Competitive than to a drunk Authentic Career sim, and that is intended.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common EA SPORTS FC 27 questions.
What is the Competitive gameplay preset?
EA’s competitive-oriented ruleset: less automated defending, more reward for manual jockey and interceptions. Use it for FUT and Clubs. Authentic is the other preset, better for Career flavour.
Did corners change in FC 27?
Yes. The Deep Dive splits corners into setup and runner control; the Closed Beta note adds free movement, Shielding, and Avoidance. Practice in Kick-Off before copying FC 26 routines.
Are keyboard controls improved on PC?
The PC Deep Dive (2 September 2026) lists modernised keyboard controls, a VRAM indicator, and faster Steam launch. See system requirements.
Should I learn defending in FUT or Kick-Off?
Kick-Off (or FC 27 Lite) first. FUT adds card pace on top of the new defending. See Kick-Off and Lite and the getting started checklist.
